New cargo terminal opens at Florianópolis International Airport

24 set 2024

The new cargo terminal at Florianópolis International Airport was inaugurated today. Zurich Airport Brasil invested R$8 million in the expansion and construction of new spaces and more than R$2,5 million in equipment, totaling R$10,5 million for the concessionaire. The expansion triples the total storage capacity of the Santa Catarina terminal.

During the event, authorities, customers and guests visited the new areas of the cargo terminal. For cargo requiring controlled temperature, a 1.850 m3 complex was built to meet the strong demand for pharmaceutical inputs. With this investment, the capacity to receive this type of cargo increases by 400%.

The expansion also includes new dry cargo warehouses totaling 1.000 m2 and tripling the storage capacity of the Santa Catarina terminal. “The new terminal is a project that meets the accelerated growth of the logistics market in the South of the country. Today we delivered yet another infrastructure project that contributes to the development of business in Santa Catarina and reinforces the position of the Floripa Airport Cargo as a leader in the movement of international cargo in the state”, says Ricardo Gesse, CEO of Zurich Airport Brasil.

The cargo terminal (TECA) at Florianópolis International Airport is experiencing the best moment in its history. In February of this year, it established itself as the largest in Santa Catarina and in the first six months of 2024, it surpassed the record achieved in 72 in terms of cargo tonnage handled by 2023%. From January until now, there have been 183 cargo flights and around 651 importers have passed through the terminal in the capital of Santa Catarina. Last year, the figures showed a 23% growth in the terminal compared to 2022, the best performance in the Brazilian market, which recorded a 22% drop.

There are currently 3 cargo routes operating regularly between Miami and Florianópolis – operated by LATAM Cargo and Avianca Cargo – and 2 weekly routes to Europe, connecting the capital of Santa Catarina to Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, and Brussels, in Belgium, with LATAM Cargo. In addition, since the beginning of the month a new import opportunity has arisen with the start of TAP's commercial route, connecting Floripa to Lisbon. The flight is expected to move 300 tons of goods per month on its 3 weekly flights.

The freighters operating in the Floripa Airport Cargo can move almost 10 thousand tons per year on the United States route and 5.400 tons on the route connecting Europe and Florianópolis. Among the main imported products are electronics, pharmaceutical, hospital supplies and textiles.
